How to Wear Your Faja in Hot Weather: Tips from Miami

Miami is one of the top cities in the U.S. for plastic surgery, and also one of the hottest. If you're recovering in the summer heat, in Miami or anywhere warm, your faja can feel like the hardest part. Here's how to stay comfortable without skipping the compression your recovery needs.

Why the heat makes it harder

Heat means sweat, and sweat under a tight garment means friction, itching and skin irritation. The real risk is that you get so uncomfortable that you take the faja off. Don't remove or loosen it without your surgeon's okay. Use the tips below to make it easier to keep on.

1. Choose breathable fabric and the right coverage

Look for fajas made with breathable fabric. When your surgeon clears you for Stage 2, the lighter compression also feels cooler. If you didn't have lipo on your thighs, ask whether a short-leg style is an option, since it covers less skin.

2. Ask about a thin liner

Many patients wear a thin, seamless cotton layer under their faja to absorb sweat and reduce friction. Ask your surgeon first, since it changes how the compression sits, and make sure it lies flat with no wrinkles.

3. Have two fajas and wash them often

  • Rotate two fajas so one is always clean and dry.

  • Hand wash in cool water with a mild soap.

  • Air dry in the shade. Skip the dryer and direct sun, because heat weakens the elastic.

4. Keep your body cool

  • Drink water all day, more than you think you need.

  • Use AC or a fan where you rest and sleep.

  • Plan outings for the early morning or evening, and take your recovery walks indoors on the hottest days.

5. Protect your incisions from the sun

Sun exposure can darken new scars. Keep incisions covered when you go out, and ask your surgeon when you can start using sunscreen or scar products on them.

6. Dress light over it

Flowy dresses, linen pants and loose cotton tops let air move around your body. Nude and black fajas are the least likely to show through light fabrics. Skip tight synthetic layers on top, which trap heat.

When to call your surgeon

Call your surgeon if you notice a rash that spreads, blisters, redness or warmth around your incisions, drainage, or a fever. Heat can make skin problems worse quickly, so it's better to check early.
